You named your podcast ‘CLUB, NO CLUB MIX’. Can you explain why and what mood you tried to capture?

I actually almost never play a whole mix of only ‘club’ tracks in most of my sets that you can find online. I have this strange feeling pretty often when doing so. I’m always adapting to the setting so normally when not playing in a club I tend to play some more downtempo stuff or tracks that you wouldn’t play in a club. I tried to get around this feeling this time. This is why ‘CLUB, NO CLUB’, with ‘no club’ referring to the fact that this has been recorded at home. I started pretty slow though as I like to change speed while I'm mixing so that I could play different genres and come up with some kind of a story. I also find it less ‘straight in your face’ than immediately starting with some more uptempo stuff.

And I like the varied aspects of it. I mean people have different emotions every day so why stick to just one thing?

Any tracks you want to highlight, a personal favorite?

If I have to highlight one I guess I would pick the third track. It’s called “Luna” by Floatpoint, from an old CD released on Sun Music which is a sub label of ESP Records. A downtempo trippy track with some strange vocals on it, just as I like. And still it has this dreamy aspect in it. I would say it’s perfect to start a night with or for driving when it’s dark.

Can you talk a bit about your digging routine when looking for records?

It all really depends on which mood I'm in at that moment. I’m still a big fan of physical shops and the social aspect of it. So when I'm out there looking for records in Brussels it would mostly be Crevette Records or Hors-série, or looking for shops when I’m abroad. Besides that when I’m ‘lazy’ and don’t want to go outside I can spend quite some time on platforms like Discogs or Bandcamp.
And then my mood at that moment, or the sets I know I have planned, guide me to specific genres (even if I almost never stick to one genre only).

Where did you find the records in this mix?

The tracks I selected here mostly come from Crevette. There are also a few vinyls from Discogs and then some tracks from CD’s I came across over the years.

Where does your artist name Tele Talks come from?

Actually at the beginning I struggled for quite some time to find something decent, until a friend told me to just write down as many words that came to my mind on a piece of paper. I started putting down the words in different columns and then this came up. I liked the alliteration aspect of it and thought it was smooth to pronounce. And I know for myself that I do talk a lot sometimes so I guess it was funny to have it in my artist name.

Together with your friends Guillaume and Pieter you have a band called PAL and a record/k7 label with the name Undo Seat Belts.
Can you describe a little bit the identity of both and what is the connection between them?

Both projects actually started when we were living with a few people in a big house close to Ambiorix Square. We managed to install a pretty decent studio in the basement. The first cassette we did was with Pieter Polspoel, Wojciech Grynko (Møzaika) and me. Later on Wojciech moved out of the house and Guillaume Kohn became the third member of the group as we know it today. Maurice Goossens, who already did some stuff for Stroom previously, was also living in our house and joined the label. I guess we all just had the urge to make and release some music together. It all just started with jamming together, and since we had already organized quite a few parties over the years (Plein Sud, Boutique Electronique), this felt like the logical next step.

There is a little new-waver in all of us! We can say that your overall selection and atmosphere as a label curator, producer, singer and deejay is pretty dark. Does dark music Make you happy?

It actually does so. I know some people would describe it as music for depressed people or lunatics but for me dark music doesn’t need to be unpleasant and can actually be quite fun. It has this raw energy that you could hear in Punk music etc. Let’s say it’s some kind of energy which is there under the surface but needs to be unleashed. And I’ve also been introduced to pretty dark music when I was a kid by my uncle. I guess this left something in me that's fueling the attraction to this type of music.

Can you tell us some more about the insides of your lyrics when you write songs for PAL?

The lyrics I write describe what I’m feeling or living at that moment.
Pretty often we just start to jam and then I write down some stuff that’s going on in my life that could fit the music. Every track is a kind of a time frame I would say. The release we did for Kiosk for example was pretty much about life during Corona times. But we also have some other released and unreleased tracks about a relationship that didn’t work out for example, so I guess it’s mostly about emotions.

What’s in the pipeline for Undo Seat Belts? We are very curious about this...

We’re actually always on the hunt for tracks or artists that could fit the label.
The last release we did was a few months ago so we’re trying to work out the next one right now.
But next to that the idea came up to maybe start to throw a few events related to the label in the future. I guess we like things to happen in an organic manner with the label. There’s no need to hurry, it just has to be and feel right for us. Just like it did until now!

Thanks Tele Talks for your inside information and your mixtape.
